White Quilt and Ruby Slippers         2022

White Quilt_Ruby Slippers is the ninth in a series of photographs engaged in the narrative of a woman, a place and a dress, which visually weaves together encoded cultural messages of personal social histories and elaborates the identities of the individual women.

White Quilt_Ruby Slippers continues the depiction of a rural culture immersed in the garden, the clothesline and the quilt. A woman hangs a hand stitched quilt on the clothesline along with a smaller machine stitched quilt and silk underwear. The ritual of the clothesline is disappearing and is somewhat memorialized in this photo series. The woman in her crisp white summer dress reclines in the white canvas sling chairs in a scene that is almost resort like. This rural garden has become a respite for the woman who escapes from the city to indulge in this idyllic space.

The ruby slippers, borrowed from the Wizard of Oz, hark to the magic of a place. When Dorothy clicks her heels and says, “There’s no place like home” she is transported to her ideal place.  The ruby slippers in this photo series represent the magic of one’s own ideal place.
