Valiants Memorial     2004 - 2006

Canadian Heritage and Valiants Foundation Commission, Confederation Square, Ottawa, ON

The Valiants Memorial is a monument to 350 years of the evolution of Canada through its military conflicts. The fourteen historical figures of this work were selected by Canadian historians to represent critical moments in our country’s history.

These historical figures create a pageantry of history as one circulates amongst them in Confederation Square in Ottawa. The bronze figures, five life-size standing and nine life-size busts, are historically accurate in detail, costume, and portrait.  It is the 'living presence' of each historical figure, achieved through the sensitively sculpted portrait and accuracy of detail, that moves beyond fact to create a memorable and evocative work. This presence reminds us that each of these heroes was a distinct human being who dedicated his or her life to faith in our country, its morals, and its principles.

The bronze figures are anchored by a curved bronze wall at the Sapper’s Stairway level, designed in collaboration with sculptor, John McEwen.  Polished bronze letters state in Latin, English and French “No day shall ever erase you from the memory of time.”

The Governor General of Canada, Michaëlle Jean, unveiled the Valiants Memorial in a symbolic ceremony in November of 2006.
